Buying a Car Out of State: How to Arrange a PPI
Remote purchases add logistics risk. A structured PPI process can reduce uncertainty before you bid, wire funds, book transport, or commit to travel.
1. Get seller permission early
Confirm whether the seller will allow a third-party inspection, where the car can be inspected, and whether a lift or road test is possible.
2. Choose an independent provider
Avoid conflicts. Ask whether the inspector has any relationship with the seller, dealer, auction, or broker.
3. Define the report before payment
Request photos, diagnostic scan results, paint readings when relevant, underside images, test-drive notes, and a written summary of major findings.
4. Use findings as decision support
A PPI does not eliminate all risk, but it can help you negotiate, walk away, or proceed with clearer expectations.
